Gardening Gloves reviewed
This is a review of 6 pairs of gardening gloves I purchased in Spring 2021. I wanted to see if I could find the ideal gardening glove for all situations and conditions in the garden. More importantly I wanted to see if I could find the perfect set of gloves to use within our gardening business in East Kilbride.
I wish I could say I found one definitive set of gloves that does it all. Unfortunately, certain gloves suit certain tasks, and it’s probably best to have a few different gloves to use for different tasks and in different weather conditions. Read on to find out if any of these gloves might suit you and your needs in the garden.
Pfanner StretchFlex
This is my favourite all rounder glove until they get wet, and it’s wet a lot of the time here in East Kilbride. These gloves are not water resistant and when they get wet they become heavy and saturated. Add a bit of mud or grass and they are messy. However, when the weather is fine, these gloves are excellent, especially in warmer weather. They have good ventilation, and are easy to get on and off. I really like these gloves, but their poor wet weather performance is why I began a search for a wet weather glove.

Positives
– a great glove in dry conditions
Negatives
– becomes heavy, saturated and messy in wet weather

Red Traffi Gloves TG180
This was my go-to glove when conditions were really wet. They were ideal for clearing out my lawn mower deck of wet grass. They stay pretty water resistant, unless the conditions are really bad. They are not really a glove for use other than if you need a water resistant glove as they can make your hands a bit sweaty.

Positives
– a great glove to use in wet conditions
Negatives
– hands can become sweaty in drier and warmer weather

Green Traffi Glove TG540 - Defender
I purchased this glove to use in wet conditions. Like the Red Traffi Glove TG180 it does perform well in the wet. However, this glove is quite rigid. It looks and feels like a thick washing up glove, and wasn’t as flexible as the Red TG180s. Having said that, I think it may give the wearer an added bit of cut & water protection if this is what you are looking for.
Price: £3.39 + VAT at time of purchase
Positives
– a good glove to use in wet conditions
Negatives
– not particularly comfortable to wear for long periods of time
Overall Score
4 out of 10 in the cold
7 out of 10 in the wet

Red H2O Klass Classic
I’m usually a size 9 (large) in gloves, but the finger length in these gloves at size 9 were too long. I purchased a size 8 (medium) and the gloves were a much better fit for me. This is a good glove for keeping your hands clean and dry. They are not as thick and water resistant as the Traffi gloves I tried out, but they are a bit comfier. The lack of some padding lets them down a little.
Price: £1.85 + VAT at time of purchase
Positives
– a good go-to glove for odd jobs around the garden
Negatives
– the lack of padding means they may not be suitable for all jobs
Overall Score
6 out of 10 in the cold
7 out of 10 in the wet
7 out of 10 in the heat
Skytec Argon
This is a great glove. Padded and comfy. Relatively water resistant. For cooler, drier weather, this was my go-to glove. Unfortunately, after prolonged use in the rain the glove becomes heavy. The liner gets saturated and is prone to pulling away from the outer fingers making it awkward and frustrating to put back on. Great for the cold, but not great when soaked.
Price: £5.05 + VAT at time of purchase
Positives
– a good go-to padded glove for cooler weather
Negatives
– becomes saturated in prolonged wet weather use
Overall Score
9 out of 10 in the cold
6 out of 10 in the wet
6 out of 10 in the heat
Wonder Grip - Thermo Plus
A great glove. It’s padded, but not as much as the Skytec Argon, however, its performace in the wet is better. I purchsed these in size 8 (medium). They are a bit neat fitting to be comfortable for me over longer periods of use. They fit my wife’s hands perfectly. These are her go-to gloves. I shall be buying more of these gloves in a size 9 (large) as I think they just beat the Skytec Argon gloves due to their wet weather performance, and unlike the Skytec Argon gloves they have no irritating inner liner to wrestle back into the fingers.
Price: £2.95 + VAT at time of purchase
Positives
– comfy fit, and good in the cold and wet
Negatives
– unsure about longevity as I didn’t wear them for long
Overall Score
9 out of 10 in the cold
9 out of 10 in the wet
7 out of 10 in the heat
